Windows XP – cidaemon.exe 100% CPU Usage Wednesday, 9 January 2013

After disabling Index Service from Computer Management, Indexing Service is still runing even after restart. This may cause that the cidaemon.exe to use 100% of CPU time, may do that on Windows startup and stop after few seconds or may go on indefinitely. In any case is annoying to have 100% CPU used for nothing. To solve this just manually disable Indexing Service, also to improve performance and minimize resource consumtion Windows Search (SearchIndexer.exe) can be disabled (see Task Manager picture).

Methods to disable the Indexing Service:

  • Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Services and Applications > Services
    • Indexing Service (cisvc.exe)
    • Windows Search (SearchIndexer.exe)
  • Start > Run > services.msc

This issue has especially significant impact on old/poor systems and is recommended to be disabled.

cidaemon.exe can be found in c:\WINDOWS\system32\
