Windows 7 BSOD – An attempt was made to write to read-only memory Sunday, 23 December 2012

The Windows 7 BSOD occurred with the error message [ An attempt was made to write to read-only memory ]. In this case the full report shows the following:

An attempt was made to write to read-only memory. The error code is 0x000000BE (0xFFFFF8800657FC9C, 0x0000000138789121, 0xFFFFF880009A9180, 0x000000000000000B)

The debugging procedure first, should include hardware tests, then if everything is good should proceed with software checks. In this case we got hardware test results as follows:

  • Memory check: OK
  • HDD check: FAIL (images)

The repair procedure using windows chkdsk and Windows 7 repair tool wasn’t successful, even the sistem could BOOT into Safe Mode. So, the easy way o solve this was:

  • access Safe Mode and salvage all data of interest
  • used some repair tools in order to try recover or mark as bad the fault sectors (an excelent tool is HDD Regenerator)
  • on successful repair/mark we ran once more the repair tool and watched carefully the same disk zone to see if the BAD sector will be detected again, the check was successful, no BAD sectors detected, the SMART confirmed that there are no BAD sector anymore
  • next step was to verify the partions using chkdsk – no errors detected but still no go with BOOT into Windows, only safe mode
  • neither Windows repair/recover tools gave any results so last option was Windows full reinstallation
