How to change Windows default shell ? Thursday, 16 October 2014

Widows OS default shell is explorer.exe, if you need to change it so that you can run a particular application (ex: XBMC for multimedia home center ) here are some simple modes to do it.

Method A

Changing the default shell (all users):

a) Start > Run > regedit
b) go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
c) look for Shell key and edit the explorer.exe value (add the new shell path)
d) Log out > Log in

Changing the default shell (only current user):

a) Start > Run > regedit
b) go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
c) add a new String Value (Edit > New > String Value) in the [Name] add [ Shell ], in the [Value data] add the the path for whatever new shell should be
d) Log out > Log in

 

 

Method B

a) Start > Run > regedit
b) go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies]System
c) look for Shell key and edit the explorer.exe value (add the new shell path) or add new [String value] if there is none
d) Log out > Log in
