Lenovo Essential B590 – Intel i3-3110M review Friday, 24 May 2013

Lenovo Essential B590 – Intel i3-3110M mostly has same design as B570e series, no more shiny surfaces as for B580 series, the only change that remain is the speaker position. The overall quality is better as B570e series, the case now is clean and simple, mostly the same with minor changes on LED positions, as for Power, Num Lock, Scroll Lock and HDD LEDs that is in the same place as in B580 series. So basicaly from design and ergonomy point of view the B590 series is a combination of best parts from B570 and B580 series. When lid is closed, the laptop seems to be made from one piece. The surface is matte as for B570 series, seem more scratch resistant. As standard improvement for B590 series no matter what CPU and video is used, we get USB 3.0 ports, Intel N wireless adaptor, Gigabit LAN adaptor, fingerprint sensor and 500 GB HDD unit which is the same as for the B580 series. A better option for HDD unit will be 7200 rpm drive, at least for high end models, but unfortunately all are at 5400 rpm units.

In full load the i3-3210M reaches overall temperature of 75oc which is nothing special and again, the surprise comes from cooler with only 42dB measured on the left side, close to cooler air grid. Again same problem, no clue what is the cooler rpm (seem there is no sensor) but again this cooler is as quiet as for B580 series.

At start, in POST keys fuctions are:

  • F1 – access the BIOS interface
  • F12 – access the BOOT menu

The cover that protects the LCD remain sturdy and solid, does not buckle at the current push in a normal situation. The same applies for the plastic band that covers the screen edges, very well placed, with no gaps between LCD and the plastic edge band. The hinges are well anchored, allows display to be operated open / closed with minimal effort, same as B570 and B580 series.

The LEDs for HDD, Num Lock and Caps Lock are located in the right corner above the keyboard. Light intensity is minimal, more than for 580 series, very discrete this time. The power LED is the same long one as fot B580 series, located on the front edge. Because of length is easy to see even if it is positioned on the edge. All LEDs are green except for the power LED, that is amber when low power threshold is reached and is flashing red when the battery start to charged, after some time becomes green again. There is another LED near the power jack that confirms power charger connection to the laptop.

Battery lock is better than the one used in B570 series but is not perfect, there is no more gap but the battery is not is firmly anchored in place. The plastic wrap covering the data ribbon in the space where the battery is installed is still there, no change for that matter. Battery capacity is in the same range, only 4400mAh (48Wh) with 10.8v.

The Intel N Wireless Network Adapter average transfer rate is around 9.00 MBs/s. Maximum connection speed is 130 MB/s (9.30MB/s) but only with default settings for [801.11n Channel Width for band 2.4] = 20 MHz Only, if you change to [auto], lets say for routers that have 20 / 40 MHz, will cut in half the maximum connection speed to 65MB/s.
