D-Link DAP-1320 Wireless Range Extender N300 review Thursday, 28 March 2013

Today we have a new review candidate, the wireless range extender DAP-1320 from D-Link. First impresion is good, the unit has clean compact design and fits perfectly in double/triple outlet, leaving plenty of space to plug something else in the side outlet(s). The white color is best choice especially when is plugged in oulets on white walls. The WPS button works just great, as D-Link specifies plug the extender, press the WPS button on your current router (D-Link DIR-825 in our case) and press and hold WPS button on DAP-1320 extender till the fron LED start flashing then wait. In our case the connection was made in less than 2 min, the extender configured itself on Repeater Mode, took the SSID name and password from main router. The only thing left to do is to access your main router or to scan the nework to see the assigned IP, then access via browser the extender web interface. Go to Setup > Extended WIFI Setup and setup the DAP-1320 according to your choices. The easy way will be to:

  • tick the [Same as Wi-Fi Network Name]
  • add [Device Name]
  • and choose a IPv4 provisioning mechanism to be used by the Repeater (default is DHCP, you can add static DHCP rule on your main router)

In operating mode, DAP-1320 connected to the main router (DIR-825) with only one wireless client connected on sustained transfer the unit warms till 38c, else runs at 35c (room temperature 24c). On 8 hours of tests no connection was dropped, the extender was stable enough but in terms o performance … better i say nothing and let the results to talk, see the tests results on the table. The extender connected to main router at 216Mbps with 96% to 100% signal strength, so we can safely say that the uplink was stable enough, distance between DIR-825 and DAP-1320 was about 5 meters with no signal dampers in between.

conclusion_wallet
  • D-Link DAP-3120 – can be found in stores (Europe) at the approximate price of 45 €
conclusion_hand_pro
  • small, compact and good guality case materials
  • easy installation & configuration procedure
  • decent average transfer speed indoors
  • fast & responsive web interface
conclusion_hand_cons
  • glossy finishing
  • the web interface is not that complete as for DIR-635, DIR-825, DIR-855
  • any modification you make (even to add/change a simple password) requires to reboot the device
conclusion_pen DAP-1320 wireless range extender looks nice, simple & compact design but is glossy. In terms of installation & configuration is as easy as D-Link claims. As for the performance, has a good uplink connection with the main router, performs medium to better for indoors usage. Seem more like “signal booster” than “range extender”
